The 2010 Impact Factor of the Journal of Neurology published by ISI is 3.853.
Even though the Impact Factor is probably the best known product
of ISI, part of the Thomson Corporation, it is not always easy to
remember how the value is calculated:

Definition of the Impact Factor: The Impact Factor for a
given year is defined as the total number of citations received
in that year to articles published in Journal of Neurology
in the previous two years divided by the total number of citable
items (source items) published by Journal of Neurology in
those two years. Taking 2010 as an example:
Cites to recent articles (1996) divided by Number of recent articles (518) results in an Impact factor of 3.853. |

Timing: The Impact Factors for a given year
are published annually in September/October of the following
year in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). Because the Impact
Factor is calculated using the citations in one year to articles
published in the two previous years, there can be a delay of
up to three and a half years before the impact of material published
in the journal appears in the JCR. |
The Impact Factor of Journal of Neurology has developed nicely over the years with only a few fluctuations. Compared to 1997 when Journal of Neurology had an Impact Factor of 1.976 corresponding with position
23 of 106 journals in the ranking of the category clinical neurology,
whereas the 2010 value corresponds with position 33 of now 185 journals. This shows clearly that Journal of Neurology has been
able not only to maintain but improve its standing.
