I. ENS Business Meeting at the 19th Meeting in Milan, Italy

The ENS 2009 Business Meeting took place during the 19th Annual Meeting of the ENS in Milan, Italy, on 23 June 2009. The meeting was conducted by Prof. José Ferro, President of the ENS and Prof. Gustave Moonen, Secretary General of the Society.

· Welcome & President’s Report: J. Ferro

J. Ferro welcomed the members of this year’s ENS Business Meeting. He noted that the 2009 Meeting of the Society in Milan is going well, and that there is a good atmosphere, with a large attendance. ENS has completed the period of transition in the introduction of its new By-Laws, and is functioning well. J. Ferro continued by pointing out that 3 new Executive Committee Members will elected during this business meeting, and that the ENS is currently engaged in very interesting cooperation outside of Europe. For example, the 2nd ENS Symposium which will take place in India in July of this year.

· Vote of 3 New Executive Committee Members: G. Moonen

G. Moonen called to attention that 3 members are leaving the ENS Executive Committee, namely C. Krarup, Y. Parman and O. Bajenaur. He thanked these 3 committee members for all the excellent service they carried out for the Society. C. Krarup served as a Teaching Course Director for many years, and has therefore enormously contributed to the educational value of the ENS meetings.

All members of the ENS present at the Business Meeting were subsequently invited to vote for 3 candidates from the total number of contenders.

Elected to the ENS Executive Committee were: E. Ruzicka, A. Siva and G. Stoll.

· Financial Report of the Treasurer: A. Steck

A. Steck pointed out that the finances of the Society are sound. He also stressed that the financial activities of the ENS have been audited by an independent accounting firm, which certified the accounts as being correct. The financial report was unanimously approved by ENS members attending the Business Meeting in Milan.

· ENS Fellowship: A. Steck

In 2009, 6 fellowships are being carried out. A. Steck continued by noting that the 10th Anniversary of the ENS Stipend Programme was celebrated in 2008, and that the past 10 years has produced 88 ENS fellowship awardees. A. Steck expressed his thanks to G. Said, G. Moonen, C. Krarup and T. Brandt of the ENS Fellowship Evaluation Committee for their excellent work in selecting talented candidates.

· Report from the Scientific Programme Director: C. Bassetti

The ENS 2009 Meeting has reached a very high scientific level, and many sessions are based on the input from the ENS Subcommittees. The 5 main symposia are concerned with the topics: stroke, MS, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders. In general, all sessions were well attended. The session conducted by the European Association of Young Neurologists in Training (EAYNT) also had a large number of participants, which demonstrates that the ENS is attracting many young neurologists to its Annual Meeting.

· Report from the Teaching Course Director: M. Filippi

M. Filippi thanked C. Krarup, the previous ENS Teaching Course Director, for the intensive work he accomplished to develop and realise the ENS 2009 teaching course programme. The ENS 2009 teaching courses covered all fields of neurology, and were well attended, including the more focused topics. Moreover, many courses were based on Subcommittee suggestions. In addition to the teaching courses, 23 workshops – which are more practically oriented – were carried out. M. Filippi noted that 3 teaching courses, and 1 main symposium, were organised jointly with the AAN. He pointed out that it is planned to continue this cooperation at future meetings of the ENS.

· Report on the Journal of Neurology: T. Brandt

D. Miller has resigned as Joint Chief Editor after completing his 10 year term. The 2 new Joint Chief Editors are G. Said and R. Barker. 5 new members of the Editorial Board will also be invited to participate as editors of the Journal. In 2008 the Journal of Neurology was covered in 244 consortia with 5,600 institutions having electronic access to the Journal. On the average, there are 30,000 full-text downloads per month. In addition, 80 papers are submitted per month, and the rejection rate is 73%. Average time to take the final decision to publish is 45 days.

· Report on ENS Subcommittees: C. Bassetti

20 Subcommittees are operating at the moment. Every ENS member is encouraged to attend Subcommittee meetings conducted during the Annual ENS Congress. Moreover, the Subcommittees are an important channel to receive input for the Scientific Programme, as well as for the Teaching Courses.

A. Steck thanks all Chairs of the Subcommittees who have submitted questions for use in the European Board Examination in Neurology that took place for the first time at this meeting. Later this year, new questions will be requested to build up the question pool of the Examination.

· Report on ENS 2010 Meeting: K.V. Toyka

The ENS 2010 Meeting is already well prepared, and attractive social events within the Berlin area are planned. The venue will be again the Berlin ICC, as it was in the 2002 Meeting.

· Other Business: G. Moonen

I. Abdullahi from Azare, Nigeria, thanked the ENS for introducing a grant for neurologists from low-income countries to attend the Annual Meetings of the ENS. He stressed that neurologists from low income countries are greatly interested in having clinical attachment to European medical facilities. I. Abdullahi kindly asked if the ENS would be able to organise such an exchange programme to European clinics.
